Our Services

Ellerslie Dental Clinic is dedicated to providing its patients with the very best dentistry has to offer in a gentle and caring environment.

Root Canals & Extractions

At Ellerslie Dental Clinic we are equipped with the latest technology. A successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth rather than having to pull it out. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting and causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

You and Dr. Sodhi may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth), or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Sodhi performs extractions including the removal of wisdom teeth. IV Sedation is available if you are nervous or apprehensive for any treatment.

IV Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry enables patients to undergo any dental treatment while feeling relaxed at ease. Intravenous sedation is the administration of tranquiler medication to the patient. Suitable for the majority of patients, I.V. Sedation enables even the most anxious of people to undergo dental treatment.

During I.V. Sedation, your comfort and safety is our primary concern. The sedatives administered create strong feelings of relaxation and comfort. During your dental treatment you will not experience any pain or discomfort. When you awaken, you will have little or no memory of the treatment.

Prior to undergoing I.V. Sedation, a consent form and a medical history form must be completed by a physician. Some medical conditions do eliminate the possibility of I.V. Sedation. You will also need a companion to accompany you to and from the practice on the day of treatment.

Sedation Dentistry may be helpful for patients who:

  • hate needles or shots
  • hate the noises, smells or tastes associated with dental care
  • are afraid
  • have a strong gag reflex
  • require extensive dental treatment
  • have sensitive teeth
  • have had a previous negative dental experience
  • have a difficulty achieving numb sensation

Crowns

A dental crown is a  tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth -- to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance.

The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
  • To restore an already broken or a tooth that has been severely worn down
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left
  • To cover severely discolored teeth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To make a cosmetic modification

What Types of Crowns Are Available?

Permanent crowns can be made from stainless steel, all metal (such as gold or another alloy), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic.

  • Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium), or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium compared with other crown types, less tooth structure needs to be removed with metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main drawback. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crown's porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crown's porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth.
  • All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide better natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies.

Root Canals

At Ellerslie Dental Clinic we are equipped with the latest technology. A successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth rather than having to pull it out. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting and causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected.

A root canal is performed when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or the pulp becomes damaged. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful. Actually, most people report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed. The discomfort experienced in the period leading up to seeking dental care is truly painful, not the root canal procedure itself.

Extractions

You and Dr. Sodhi may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severly decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired.

If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp -- the center of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels -- bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp, leading to infection. Often this can be corrected with root canal therapy (RCT), but if the infection is so severe that antibiotics or RCT do not cure it, extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection.

Neuromodulators (eg: Botox, Xeomin, Dysport)

Top Questions about Botox / Xeomin

  1. What is Botox/Xeomin/Dysport?

Botox and Xeomin and Dysport (3 different brand names) are neuromodulators. They temporarily stop the muscle it is injected in from contracting. Once the muscle is relaxed, the skin around it is restored to its smooth and natural state (removing wrinkles), and reduces any pain the muscle was causing by being over used.

  2. What problem areas can this be used for?

Cosmetically it can remove: frown lines, "crow's feet" around the eyes, wrinkles, chin dimples etc. For pain management it is used for TMJ jaw pain, headaches and migraines.

  3. Does it hurt?

It is injected into the site with small quick pinches, similar to mosquito bites.

  4. When does it take effect?

It can take up to two weeks for the Neromodulator's to take full effect, but you could notice gradual changes in 2-5 days.

  5. How long do Neuromodulators last?

Everyone and every experience is different. Typically it will last for 3-4 months, at which time you would return for your next injections if you liked the results.

  6. What are the side effects?  How will it feel afterwards?

After the injections, patients have experienced a mild headache and slight tenderness at the injection site. Bruising may occur but this is extremely rare. The area targeted may feel "tight" over time.

  7. How much does it cost?

Botox / Xeomin / Dysport is $10 per unit. Please book your consultation at no charge to discuss your needs and wants for this treatment. From there we can estimate how many units you will need and we can then give you a proper estimate.

  8. Does my insurance cover it?

In many cases, Insurance companies are starting to cover treatments for many reasons. TMJ, headaches and migraines are successfully treated this way, and is well recognized. A preauthorization can be sent to your insurance company to see if this is a covered service for you.

  9. Will anyone know or notice it?

Visits are quick, they take about 15 minutes. Pop over on your lunch break and you are done! No recovery time needed. Patients have gotten compliments from friends, saying they look "rested" and "rejuvenated". Results can be as natural or as dramatic as you like. Speak with Dr.Sodhi to get the results you want.
